Getting Started in Two Steps

1. No Sweat Assessment

Before getting started, we need to establish if this is a good fit for both sides. We'd like to learn a bit more about you, your goals and current training. And we're sure you'd like to know more about us, what we offer and what you'll get out of being a member at our gym!

So to kick off, we start with a no sweat assessment which is a 30 minute in person (or on the phone) meeting with our head coach, Ian. During this session we'll cover the following:

  • Your current regime and goals
  • Our programme, getting results and realistic expectations re timelines
  • Walking through how to get started i.e. general class outline, the coaching team, programme overview
  • A mini movement assessment. Here, Ian wants to just see how well you move through some very basic movements - squat, bend and press. He will provide some feedback with actionable tips to improve mobility, range of motion and strength.
  • We'll answer all your questions and concerns!

That's it, you're ready to get started into our Elements Class (see below)

2. Elements Class

Elements is an introductory course that will expose you to some of the movements we do, explain the why behind our program, demystify nutrition and map out your goals. The programme lasts one month where you will meet with a dedicated coach one-on-one or in groups of max 4. These sessions will teach you all you need to know about CrossFit Solas and set you up for success in our classes. We run our Elements groups at set times morning and evening.

Should I get fit before I join CrossFit?

Our entry system to CrossFit Solas is called Elements. This is a programme designed to teach people the fundamentals and basics of movement and fitness. Over 95% of clients that Ian has trained in Elements over the past 12 years have started from a fitness level of 0. So the simple answer is no.

Is CrossFit dangerous? (injuries etc)

This comment is something that frustrates us. The CrossFit training programme is the best training programme in the world, covering all elements of fitness and the ten physical skills. If this programme is taught incorrectly, it can be dangerous but this is the same for any training programme that exists. Frequently, people blame the CrossFit programme on their injuries when it's poor coaching that is responsible.

We run two separate programmes at Solas - our health & fitness and our competitor programme. Health & fitness is designed to rebuild the body. Our competitor programme would contain the same risks as any sport - hockey, football, triathlon etc.

All our clients receive a postural & movement analysis on entry and will not be permitted to carry out movements that their bodies aren't capable of performing.

Will I get big from doing CrossFit?

This is the most frequently asked question by females. Our CrossFit health & fitness programme is designed and tailored to females' muscle fibre types to ensure a lean and toned look. On entry to our gym, we will discuss and map out your goals in order to make sure the programme you are doing in the gym fits the body shape that you want. Most of the females you see on instagram or at the CrossFit games train 4-5 x per day and strive to achieve the physique they have to compete at the highest level in the world.
